MetaMask is a cross-chain wallet that allows you to manage Ethereum and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchains. By integrating Trezor with MetaMask, you can manage and sign transactions securely using your hardware wallet.
What Is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a non-custodial wallet supporting Ethereum and various EVM-compatible blockchains such as Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Fantom, and Avalanche. When paired with your Trezor device, MetaMask leverages Trezor’s security to manage and sign transactions without exposing your private keys.
How Do I Use MetaMask with Trezor?
Download MetaMask
Install the latest version of MetaMask for Chrome or Firefox.
Set Up MetaMask (If New)
If you’re new to MetaMask:
- Set up a wallet and generate a recovery seed.
- This seed is separate from your Trezor and is not needed if you are using MetaMask solely with Trezor.
Connect Trezor
- Open MetaMask and click on the account icon.
- Select Hardware Wallet and click Connect Trezor.
- A Trezor Connect prompt will appear asking for permissions and to export the public key. Click Allow and Export to continue.
Unlock Your Trezor Account
- Select the account you wish to use and click Unlock.
- Accounts are presented in a specific order. For example, if you choose the third address on the list, it will not appear in Trezor Suite until you have used the second address.
- Repeat these steps if you have multiple accounts.
How Do I Send Transactions with MetaMask?
Fill in Transaction Details
Enter the recipient address and amount in MetaMask.
Confirm the Transaction
- Click Next and then Confirm.
- Check the transaction details on your Trezor device and confirm.
Done
Your transaction is now processed.
How Do I Sign Messages with MetaMask?
Sign Messages
MetaMask allows you to sign messages, useful for signing into certain decentralized applications (dApps) like CryptoKitties.
Manage Accounts
- MetaMask shows a default account (not linked to Trezor) and your Trezor accounts.
- If your Trezor is not connected, you can still see your default MetaMask account and previously used Trezor-generated wallets.
- Only accounts linked with your Trezor can be accessed and signed with your Trezor device. MetaMask’s default account operates independently of Trezor.
Note: Ensure your Trezor is connected to access accounts linked to it. If you can’t access an account in Trezor Suite, it’s not part of your Trezor wallet.
